This station, located in the London Borough of Hillingdon in Greater London, serves the London Underground as well as National Rail trains. The station was opened in 1906, with the main building being completed in the 1960s. The original 500m2 asphalt roof of the station building was in poor condition and was suffering from water penetration, with a series of rooflights that had also failed. With commuters constantly using the station, the six main roof areas needed to be repaired quickly and safely, with minimal disruption to travel or risk to anyone therefore an ultra low odour solution was required.
The roof of the station had decayed and needed swift attention. However, because the station is an important gateway to London and other locations, it needed to stay fully open while the works took place. Furthermore, there were restricted working times because of the close proximity of the building to the railway tracks, which would operate as normal during the refurbishment. With staff and passengers using the station throughout the works, it was vital to avoid any risk of fire by using a cold-applied waterproofing solution.
The project team surveyed the roof and found that the original asphalt roof was failing, with a number of rooflights also suffering from leaks. The solution was to clean the original roofing and remove any debris before overcoating it with an epoxy metal primer to improve adhesion and prevent any bleed through from the previous solar coating.
Two coats of the fully reinforced Centech PU system, which is reinforced with Centech GFM to provide additional stability, were then applied to provide a long-term waterproofing solution. Ultra-low odour, non-flammable and free of any harmful materials, Centech PU is one of the safest liquid roofing solutions on the market.
The UV-stable system was quick and easy to apply, making it ideal for a busy commuter station. It was also able to accommodate the split levels on the roofs and the plant and air handling units, which were difficult to detail around. The old rooflights were replaced with new Centech rooflights to provide added daylight with superior thermal performance.
The liquid applied Centech PU waterproofing solution was applied both quickly and safely to the six multi-level roofs, minimising contractor time on site and avoiding any disruption to staff and commuters. Centech is user-friendly and rapid to apply, making it the ideal solution for projects with complex schedules. In this case, the roofs that were located next the tracks were safely refurbished at night when fewer trains were running.
Thanks to the low odour and safe properties of the Centech system, neither the staff, passengers or roofing operatives were exposed to any unpleasant odours or harmful materials during application. A full Centaur 20-year single point guarantee was provided on completion of the project.
