This Hospital in the South, is one of the UK’s largest general hospital foundation trusts, providing acute and specialist care services to more than 500,000 people across the region.
The 800m2 roof of the ICU unit was in a state of disrepair and was suffering water ingress, which was posing a risk both to vulnerable patients and the valuable medical equipment in the building. With staff and patient wellbeing a top priority, it was essential to repair the roofs quickly and safely, with a low-risk solution.
The roof of the ICU unit had deteriorated and required immediate refurbishment, meaning that the remedial works would have to be done whilst the building was occupied.
Furthermore, in this case, the ICU unit was caring for some patients who were suffering with Covid-19 and had acute respiratory problems. It was therefore of paramount importance to ensure that patients did not come into contact with any respiratory irritants.
With the building occupied during the works, it was also essential to avoid any risk of fire by using a cold-applied waterproofing solution.
During the roof survey carried out by one of our field technicians, the roof build up was found to be a fleece back single ply membrane, that had been installed over a bituminous membrane with chippings still embedded and a profile metal deck.
The core samples taken illustrated that the roof coverings and existing build up did not meet building regulations and there were significant issues of water ingress The solution was to strip the existing roof build up back to the bituminous VCL and prepare for treatment.
The specification included a Centech VCL/SA carrier membrane, Centech PIR secured with Centech High Foam Adhesive, a second layer of Centech VCL/SA carrier membrane and two coats of the fully reinforced Centech PU system.
This formed a seamless and durable roof covering, which also encapsulated the north roof lights. This was overlaid in parts with the Centech Quartz walkway system. Centech PU is ultra-low odour, non-flammable and stripped of free monomer isocyanate, making it one of the safest liquid roofing solutions on the market.
Air monitoring surveys confirmed that no harmful odours entered the building during the works.
The liquid applied Centech PU waterproofing solution was quickly and safely applied to minimise contractor time on site and prevent unnecessary disruption to staff and patients.
The ultra-low odour and safe nature of the system ensured that no one was exposed to any unpleasant odours or the risk of sensitisation by inhalation during application. Phase 2 of the project used the same Centaur specification to repair a 600m2 section of roof on the south block of the hospital.
A Centaur 20-year single point guarantee was provided on completion of the project. The client was delighted with the end result.
