McDonald’s has more than 1,450 restaurants across the UK and Ireland and employs over 135,000 people. Around 1100 restaurants are franchised, including the recently opened restaurant in Cheltenham, which was formerly a TGI Friday’s outlet. The original liquid waterproofed roofs had completely failed, were retaining moisture in the build-up and therefore were in need of total refurbishment to ensure they became watertight once again.
The main contractor CDS Group found that the two roofs on the building were in such poor condition, with water pouring inside, meaning they needed to be totally replaced with a new high performing roof system.
The building was being refurbished inside and out to transform it into a new McDonalds and was therefore going to be closed throughout the works. With a grand opening planned, it was essential that this would not be delayed, which meant that the roof refurbishment had to be carried out quickly without disrupting the other trades that were also working on site.
It was vital to use a cold-applied, low-odour waterproofing solution to eliminate any health or fire risks to contractors and speed up the application time
Core samples were taken from both the higher and lower level roofs to establish the build-up and asses the quality of the insulation, which upon investigation, was found to be retaining significant moisture. This meant that overcoating was not an option and both roofs needed to be stripped back to the timber deck prior to the installation of a new warm roof.
Any redundant rooflights were removed with the residual openings being made structurally sound and re-decked to be flush with the surrounding roof.
After stripping back, the two roofs were primed before being treated with the Centech PU 20 built up roof system, which incorporated a Centech SA Carrier/VCL vapour control layer, Centech PIR insulation and a Centech SA Carrier/VCL carrier membrane. Two coats of the Centech waterproofing system, which is fully reinforced with Centech GFM for durability, were then roller applied to provide a durable and watertight finish to the new warm roofs.
Cold-applied and non-flammable, Centech PU is ultra-low odour and free of any harmful materials, making it one of the safest liquid roofing solutions available. With such a short window to complete the roof works, it was an advantage that Centech PU is quick to apply and cures quickly.
Centech PU eliminates the need for any hot works on the roof and, because it is low odour, it is safe to use and does not expose anyone to pungent smells or the risk of sensitisation by inhalation during application.
The Centech solution allows for quick application and it cures rapidly, even in cold and wet conditions, which minimised any delays to the schedule. This was essential given the pressing two-week timescale that the contactor had to complete the project.
A comprehensive Centaur 20-year single point guarantee was provided for both roofs on completion of the project.
