Northern Railway Station

This Northern Railway Station was built in 1867 and redeveloped in 2011 at an estimated cost of £2,000,000. The ticket office was rebuilt to help the local economy, modernise the facility, and maintain historic aesthetics aligned with its heritage.

History Of The Project

Unfortunately, several years later, this station had reports of leaks across various walkways and podiums into the sublevel below. A versatile approach was required to ensure the works could be conducted swiftly and safely whilst maintaining the original project.

The Challenge

Safety and speed are a necessity on all projects. However, when working on access routes in close proximity to the public, they are paramount. Several walkways and plinths required urgent refurbishment with minimal disruption to service. A perfect job for our cold applied, low odour, non-hazardous membrane to be utilised.

There were also several technical complexities to overcome throughout the project. These included a transition from buried to surface membrane as well several large support stations, key features in the building architecture, requiring a versatile solution.

The Solution

Local contractors considered an old PMMA system but sought a safer option, requesting Centaur Technologies for our innovative products and wellbeing commitment.

Centech APA was utilised, as the quick cure, hard-wearing product allowed for the complete system to be installed and trafficable within the expedited time frame.

The Centech APA, like all of Centaur’s waterproofing products, is ultra-low-odour, non-flammable and free of the harmful materials found elsewhere in the industry, making it the safest liquid membrane to install on the market today.

The numerous structural stations throughout the project, also included in the waterproofing works, required an alternative approach. The waterproofing was terminated to a tight, masked edge with the edge retention aided by extending the primer treatment marginally past the termination point of the Centech APA system, resulting in a finished aesthetic in keeping with the client’s expectations.

Performance Benefits

The works were conducted by a local Centaur Quality Partnership contractor to the highest standards allowing for a Centech 20-year guarantee to be issued upon completion and sign off the project.
